  • Sergei Bobrovsky in Montreal, is it possible?
  • Sergei Bobrovsky in Montreal, is it possible?

Why the Montreal Canadiens might pursue Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky as the trade deadline approaches.

He is having a very average season compared to his usual standards with an efficiency percentage of 0.873%.

Now, the question arises, why would the Canadiens be interested in acquiring the 6'2'' goalie?

Certainly, Sergei Bobrovsky is not having a dream season, but once in the playoffs, we know how much better he can be. Moreover, the Panthers have shown interest in trading Bobrovsky, which means the door is not wide open but rather ajar. The Russian's salary is $10M/year; however, the Canadiens could pay much less if the Panthers retain 50% of his salary: $10M/2 = $5M, not too bad. And what if I told you that the price could be even lower, since it’s the last year of Bobrovsky's contract, there are only 42 days left on his annual contract, so the Canadiens would only pay for those remaining days, that is:

    If 50% is retained: $5M * 42/192 = $109,375 only. If not 50% retained: 42/192 = $1.09375M.

However, sorry but you can quickly forget this option because if Bobrovsky plays just 1 game in the playoffs, the Canadiens will have to pay the entirety of his annual contract ($10M) or ($5M). And I also want to point out that the 37-year-old Russian already has a no-trade clause concerning a total of 16 teams, since he is currently in the East, I suppose he would eventually like to stay in this association. According to the sitePuck Pedia, the Montreal Canadiens have $1,490,309 on the salary cap, which means that regardless of whether Bobrovsky costs $5M or $10M, the Canadiens will need to free up a lot of space on the salary cap. Logically, in making a trade, Patrik Laine is expensive for the Canadiens given the contribution he brings to them.

Now, there is a problem, what to do with Montembeault and Dobes? Because, surely if Sergei comes to Montreal, one or the other will logically have to leave, we are not going to return to a situation with a rotation of 3 goalies. Honestly, I couldn't say who might leave. In my opinion, if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton go after Bob, it’s as a rental player who will stay just this year to bring the Canadiens to the playoffs and who knows, maybe far in the playoffs.

But I still think that the Canadiens' priority is to acquire a right-handed defenseman.
